The Narita Golf Club course is characterised by a design that makes the most of its favourable geographical conditions. Taizo Kawada, who designed the course, says: "Eighteen complete stories form one long story. I think that's what a golf course is."
As he says, each hole is designed with its own characteristics.
The course returns to the origins of golf with a single green of bent grass, cleverly placed lakes and abundant trees, all of which enhance the strategic nature of the course. At Narita Golf Club, the 6-metre wide, approximately 1000-yard approach road is also considered in-bounds; OB stakes are driven into the outside of the road (to the right on entry) and the ball can be played from there with no penalty if it goes onto the road.
When one thinks of a course where the road is also in bounds, the 17th hole at the sacred St Andrews Old Course, otherwise known as the "Road Hole", immediately comes to mind. The designer, Mr Kawada, may have designed this course with British golf courses in mind. Enjoy the course design that makes you feel that Mr Kawada may have designed the course with English golf courses in mind.
