Lanna Golf Club is laid out on an area of 700 rai. The course is conveniently located 10 minutes from the center of Chiang Mai and within the Lanna Sports Center. Lanna was one of the first Thailand golf courses in the country, and it is very popular with locals. The condition is good, but perhaps not up to the level of the newer courses in the area.
A highlight is the second, where the decision of how far to play your tee shot down a narrowing fairway with water left dictates the club selection. A tricky fifth hole follows, where a precise approach shot creates a chance at par or birdy.
There are three nine-hole courses, which are flattish. The first and second nine are tree-lined and have a reasonably long parkland layout. Together, they comprise the Old Course. The course features unique holes with fairways divided by large trees. Several lakes and many strategically placed bunkers add to the challenges.
The best hole is the 11th, which plays as a par-4 and has a narrow fairway with water flanking the left side. The 16th is also a challenging hole and requires a perfectly hit approach shot to reach the green in regulation and set up an easy par.
The third nine has six holes within a race track that plays shorter. Doi Suthep Mountain and Temple are visible from all parts of the course. Shot accuracy, not distance, gets a good score.
The clubhouse is quite old and more for locals. However, food prices are very reasonable, with many Thai dishes and cold beers available for less than USD 3.
